Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim and the top leaders in his Parti Keadilan Rakyat will attend the Himpunan Hijau 2.0 gathering due to be held in Kuantan this Sunday to show full support towards the green initiative in the country, and to protest the controversial Lynas rare earth plant that Prime Minister Najib Razak has insisted on running in Gebeng , Pahang.
“To show how serious we are about this because it affects the safety of our future generations, PKR is asking all its members throughout the country and Pahang in particular to show their support for Himpunan Hijau 2.0 as well,” PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution told Malaysia Chronicle.
“PKR has also shifted a two-day get-together for party leaders to meet Anwar from Lumut to Kuantan. This is the extent of our commitment to this project, which is spearheaded by our vice president and Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh.”
Already, Najib moves to block out rally
However, despite the Najib administration promising greater democratic freedom and upholding citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly, the police have until now refused to issue a permit for the rally that is expected to drawn at least 20,000 concerned citizens to protest rare-earth mining in Pahang, which is actually Najib’s home state.
The Kuantan Municipal Council (MPK) has already begun to fence off the MPK1 field where the rally is planned, although MPK president Zulkifli Yaacob was quick to say this was to facilitate upgrading of the field for the Sukma games in July.
