Malaysians want good jobs, not BR1M aid, Pakatan MPs tell PM

KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 — Malaysians want lucrative jobs and a high-income economy instead of direct cash handouts that would be unnecessary if public funds are managed well, Pakatan Rakyat (PR) lawmakers told Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Referring to Najib’s remark that Malaysians were quick to complain about rising prices after the Goods and Services Tax (GST), DAP’s Kluang MP Liew Chin Tong explained that the anger is because the new consumption tax affected everyone including those struggling to make ends meet.

In other countries, Liew noted that GST is used to shift the tax burden from the wealthy to the middle-class. In Malaysia, however, the GST is used against Malaysians who do not even qualify to pay the income tax, he said.

“What ordinary Malaysians want is not BR1M, they want decent jobs with decent pay, which the government fails to create the conditions for such an economy,” Liew told Malay Mail Online, referring to the 1 Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M) cash aid.

“There is so much unskilled foreign labour in the economy that discourages the concurrent improvement of skills, technology and wages,” he added.

Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli from PKR said there would be no need for the BR1M cash aid policy if the country’s finances are managed well and leakages and corruption eliminated.

“Najib by now would have heard loud and clear that the public is furious with GST not so much because we have to pay tax; but we are horrified with the kind of financial scandals we have been witnessing so far,” Rafizi told Malay Mail Online.

“But that’s where he’s cornered — as the public holds him responsible for the financial mess and therefore, the decision to levy GST is viewed as his knee-jerk reaction to cover for the losses caused by these financial scandals,” the PKR secretary-general added.

The controversy surrounding state-owned 1 Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), which is RM42 billion in debt, has sparked public outrage.
