S..l..o..w-motion probe on 1MDB

Pua: IGP should not delay 1MDB probe

The parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and the Auditor-General have both indicted former CEO Shahrol Halmi over the gross mismanagement of 1MDB

KUALA LUMPUR: Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua has urged police to act with the necessary haste and urgency to ensure that the culprits behind the RM50 billion 1MDB Scandal are quickly brought to justice. “The failure by police to act, and the irony of the speed of investigations overseas, will only lead Malaysians to conclude that it’s doing its utmost best to cover up the heinous crime involving the most powerful political figures in the country,” he warned in a statement.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Khalid Abu Bakar was famous for being a Twitter-happy top cop, pointed out Pua. “He demands instant arrests and questioning of witnesses and suspects over the most trivial of alleged offences like ‘insulting’ a leader.”

Now, Khalid was taking his own sweet time over what has been internationally recognised as “the heist of the century”, he charged.

“I am not sure if I should be shocked that the police failed to even interview the 1MDB key man after more than a year,” lamented Pua. “Now that even the PAC and the Auditor-General have both indicted Shahrol Halmi over the gross mismanagement of 1MDB, Khalid should no longer be waiting.”

Despite the parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC) having tabled its report on April 7, more than six week ago, the police have not called up the key 1MDB protagonist identified in the entire scandal.

Pua, who is also DAP National Publicity Secretary, was commenting on Home and Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi confirming in Parliament on Thursday that the police have yet to question former 1MDB CEO Shahrol Azral Halmi as part of their probe into the scandal-ridden firm.

“All witnesses involved will be called by police if necessary to record their statements and for further investigations. Shahrol has not been called to record his statement as of yet,” Pua quoted Zahid as replying to Raub MP Mohd Ariff Sabri Abdul Aziz. “The police appear to be dragging their feet over the entire investigation.”

The police in fact, charged the MP, appear to be taking their own sweet time over the 1MDB investigations when even the Auditor-General has confirmed that there was more than sufficient basis to question officials in the scandal-ridden firm.
