MalaysianOfficial1 – A new, powerful pokemon monster?

Who is #MalaysianOfficial1?

One cannot help, but to note the amount of attention given to the press conference given by the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) last night.

Instead of pressing charges against 1MDB officials or implicated persons as many would have assumed, it was rather an application to confiscate assets amounting to some US$1 billion (RM4.04billion) allegedly stolen from the sovereign fund founded by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Five were implicated. “Malaysian Official 1”, Najib’s stepson Riza Aziz, Jho Low and two other Abu Dhabi officials.

In Harry Potter, the main antagonist Lord Voldermort is referred to as “you know who” or “he who must not be named”. Nearly every witch or wizard dares not utter his name.

In the civil suit involving US$1 billion, there is a “Malaysian Official 1”. So who is this Malaysian Official 1?

According to the press statement, Malaysian Official 1 is a high-ranking Malaysian official in the government, a public servant, a relative of Riza Aziz and a friend of Jho Low.

He also assumed a position of authority in 1MDB, had the authority to approve all appointments and removals, and his signature is required for all major transactions.

In 2009, the same Malaysian Official 1 also received some US$20 million from diverted funds meant for 1MDB, and is also the holder of an AmBank account that received a whopping US$681million in March 2013.

Is it Datuk Rahman Dahlan? Or Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak? Or maybe Datuk Seri Hadi Awang? Unlikely.

Last midnight, the hashtag #MalaysianOfficial1 was trending on Twitter.

One Twitter user, by the handler @minicass tweeted “Tomorrow, #MalaysianOfficial1 will officiate the amusement park of lies”.

Another @Gurumisafar tweeted “orang paling tak boleh tido malam ni adalah #MalaysianOfficial1”, suggesting Prime Minister Najib Razak would be the one finding it the hardest to sleep.

Former candidate in the Teluk Intan by elections Dyana Sofya asked if it was “a new, rare, powerful pokemon we gotta catch?”

Najib’s recent Facebook posting was spammed with #MalaysianOfficial1 comments.

One Mohd Faiz Mohd Noor commented “#RespectMyMalaysianOfficial1”

Not too hard to guess, who the Malaysian Official 1 is.

On that note, Malaysian Official 1 must come clean and clear his name once and for all. The revelation of money being spent has shocked many. The US DOJ calls it “the largest amount in the history of combating kleptocracy in the United States”.

Mere denials are not enough. Perhaps, a temporary leave would do, considering the scale and quantum involved.

The report listed hundreds of millions spent on gambling, stakes in EMI, Van Gogh and Monet paintings, real estate assets, a private jet, luxurious yachts, and the production of a film.

In June 2016, the Mayor of Tokyo resigned after being caught using public funds for Crayon Shin Chan cartoons.

So, what is Malaysian Official 1 going to do?
