Rahman Dahlan ticked off for ‘showing ignorance’ on DOJ lawsuit

A DAP lawmaker has hit out at Umno minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan for being ignorant in saying that his boss Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak was not part of the investigation of US Department of Justice’s (DOJ) civil suit on 1MDB.

“The BN strategic communications director has let out an open secret by publicly acknowledging Najib as MO1,” said DAP Klang MP Charles Santiago in a press statement today.

“Abdul Rahman’s conclusion that Najib’s name was omitted in DOJ’s lawsuit because the premier was not part of the investigations is fundamentally flawed and demonstrates his ignorance,” he said.

Abdul Rahman has admitted that Malaysian Official 1 (MO1) is Najib himself yesterday, but stressed that Najib was not named in the DOJ’s civil suit because he was not being probed.

Najib was not named in the DOJ’s suit because he has no property in the US bought using money stolen from 1MDB, said Charles.

“But the report refers to MO1 36 times and has named Najib’s stepson Riza Aziz, the financier who helped set up 1MDB Jho Low and Khadem Al Qubaisi, former managing director of Abu Dhabi’s International Petroleum Investment Co, as defendants,” he said.

Charles pointed out that some of the allegations on MO1 were found in The Wall Street Journal report last year on the US$681 million (RM2.6 billion) that was chanelled into Najib’s personal bank account.

“The lawsuit said the money, from a 2013 bonds sale by 1MDB, was transferred to the account of ‘MO1’; it clearly incriminates him (Najib),” he said.

“Goldman Sachs, which issued the bonds almost in a jiffy following a private meeting with Najib in Switzerland, is also being investigated,” he added.

The US government is seeking to recover more than US$1 billion worth of assets bought using money stolen from the state development fund, he said.

This is an abuse of the financial system in a complex money-laundering scheme involving prominent political leaders, top businessmen, bankers and the ruling elite, he added.

“Abdul Rahman could rant and apple-polish all he wants, but it’s best he tries to understand the report before continuing to indulge in even more nonsensical arguments,” he said.

He urged the minister to stop apple-polishing and admit that the MO1 is part of the DOJ’s probe.
